What is Zakat?
Zakat (zakaat, zakah), or almsgiving, is one of the five pillars of Islam. This means that Zakat is mandatory for every sane, adult Muslim who owns wealth over a certain amount – known as the Nisab – he or she must pay 2.5% of that wealth as Zakat.
What is Nisab?
The nisab is the minimum amount of total wealth that Muslims must own before Zakat becomes mandatory. The Prophet (ﷺ) set the nisab threshold to be equivalent to 87.48 grams of gold and 612.36 grams of silver.
Obligatory Act of Charity
Zakat is obligatory for those who meet specific wealth and income criteria, and they are required to give a portion of their wealth to those less fortunate.
Purification of Wealth
Zakat is described as a means of purifying one’s wealth and income. By giving away a portion of their wealth, Muslims cleanse their earnings of any impurities and earn spiritual rewards.
Wealth Redistribution
Zakat plays a crucial role in addressing economic inequality. It ensures that the affluent members of the community support those who are in need and create a more equitable and just society.
